NATURE OF THE CASE: This was a dispute over the right to a jury trial.
FACTS: Lewis (D) was a mail handler for the United States Postal Service and one day he was caught by inspectors opening up several letters and taking the contents of those letters. A test letter was sent with marked currency and D opened that mail and was arrested. D was charged with two counts of obstructing the mail. Each count carried a prison sentence of six months. D requested a jury but was denied. D was convicted and appealed.
