NATURE OF THE CASE: This is an appeal from convictions for assault, murder, and robbery.
FACTS: Marsh (D) and Williams were both charged with assault, murder, and robbery. Williams confessed, and this confession was used against D at D's trial. All references to D were omitted, but there was other evidence present at trial linking D to the confession. D was convicted. D appealed, claiming that the confession should not have been admitted at trial. The court of appeals reversed, and the Supreme Court granted review.
